Participants will learn:

  • What conflict is (and is not)
  • What collaboration is (and is not)
  • Why all municipal officials need to learn how to productively navigate conflict
  • The basic concepts and skills for how to productively navigate conflict, including:
    • Effective listening
    • Effective framing
    • How to focus on interests and not positions
    • How to stay calm and present when dealing with conflict
  • How to apply these concepts to real-world challenges

What to expect: 

  • This training will be highly interactive. Participants should plan to arrive on time, stay the whole time, and come ready to engage with one another. 
  • To facilitate everyone’s learning, this will be a “device-free” training, meaning participants will be encouraged to put their phones, computers, and other devices away during training time so they can be fully present and engaged.
  • Free parking will be provided.
  • Lunch, beverages, and snacks will be provided.
  • Registered participants will receive additional information via email in advance of the training.

Instructor: 

Danya Rumore, Ph.D., is the Director of the Wallace Stegner Center Environmental Dispute Resolution (EDR) Program, a Research Professor of Law, and a Clinical Associate Professor of Planning at the University of Utah. She is a nationally recognized facilitator and provider of conflict resolution and collaboration training, and she has trained and coached thousands of professionals in the skills of conflict competence and collaboration. She was the 2025 recipient of the Utah Council for Conflict Resolution Peacekeeper Award.
