About the League

The Utah League of Cities and Towns (ULCT) was first organized in 1907 and serves the State of Utah’s 257 cities and towns in the State of Utah as a non partisan, inter-local, government cooperative. ULCT represents municipal government interests with a strong, unified voice at the state and federal levels. Further, ULCT provides information, training and technical assistance to local officials on municipal issues, and works to create a greater public awareness and understanding of municipal responsibilities, governance and administration.

Introduction to the Utah League of Cities and Towns

On December 11, 2021, local leaders in Utah met with the Utah League of Cities and Towns to learn and discuss the fundamentals of local government. This video is an introduction to the League presented at “Elected Officials Essentials” by ULCT Executive Director Cameron Diehl.

ULCT has three primary pillars that are the foundation of our legislative advocacy: respect, collaboration, and outcomes.  The Utah State constitution and state law both outline the role of cities and towns.  Simply put, we exist to provide for the health, safety, and welfare of our residents.  The traditional term of “local control” is an acknowledgement that government closest to the people governs best and cities work best when they can exercise their legal authority to meet those constitutional and statutory responsibilities.  We urge the State of Utah, the federal government, and county governments to respect the role of cities in providing services and infrastructure for our residents.  We seek to collaborate with other levels of government, the private sector, and our collective constituents to ensure Utah’s unparalleled quality of live.
